Hi! My name is Ciara Butler, I am a lactation consultant (IBCLC), mother and a midwife. I trained to be a nurse in London in the 90's but always had midwifery in my sights. On my return to Dublin in 2000 I started my midwifery training in the National Maternity Hospital. From the beginning I had a huge interest in breastfeeding. I enjoyed all aspects of midwifery, but supporting breastfeeding parents always gave me the most pleasure.
I moved to Co. Wicklow in 2004 and also moved to work in the maternity unit in Wexford General Hospital. I spent 10 happy years working there as a midwife. I became an IBCLC in 2011 and sat my exam three weeks before my 3rd daughter was born! I now provide one to one antenatal and postnatal breastfeeding help and support.
Having my own 4 beautiful daughters was the my biggest breastfeeding learning curve. I realised breastfeeding was way more than just about feeding your baby. It helps you physically and emotionally connect with your baby, it helps your baby feel secure and safe and it teaches you how to respond instinctively to all your baby's needs.
